Intangible Cultural Heritage

The unique texture and flavor of rice rolls lies in its traditional stone milling process, which can be traced back to the early Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) in Guangdong and Guangxi provinces. In ancient times, rice was soaked in water and ground into a batter to ensure the rolls retained their natural flavor and nutrients. Today the process is done by stone milling with the same results.

Milled rice, initially created as a portable food option for workers and travelers, has since transcended regional boundaries to become a worldwide sensation; a testament to the enduring legacy of Chinese cuisine.

While you can generally get rice rolls (or Chang Fen) at any dim sum restaurant, what’s unique about Yin Ji is the tradition to continue the fabled rice pull method. Rice batter is poured on special cloth, steamed, and gently removed. The result - a much smoother and tastier rice roll.

At Yin Ji Rice Roll Philadelphia, we strive to preserve and continue the long established tradition of handheld rice roll making. Combining modern innovation with traditional practices, we hope you’ll join us for a unique culinary experience where heritage meets flavor.
